Fire at PJ’s Lager House, no people hurt

There was a fire in an upstairs apartment at PJ’s Lager House on Monday evening. No people were hurt, although three cats belonging to the tenants died after CPR. The fire broke out around 10:30 p.m. during a show featuring Zombie Jesus & the Chocolate Sunshine Band, Curtin, and Jeffrey Jablonsky. “We just smelled...

City Slang: Ronny Tibbs & the 305’s at the Lager House

Six and the Sevens is an odd band. Musically, they have so much going for them; super-catchy tunes, killer riffs, athemic, clap-along choruses and basically all round great musicianship. There’s just something about the way the guys carry themselves that isn’t totally familiar to rock show attendees. It’s like these adults are in a...

City Slang: Zombie Jesus, Bailiff and He-Bops at the Lager House

Local indie pop band Trait was supposed to open this show, but a family emergency forced them to cancel. Up steps Zombie Jesus & the Chocolate Sunshine Band, or half of them anyway. This being a last minute show, two of the band members were unable to play, but that didn’t stop front man...

City Slang: Alison Lewis at the Lager House

I was not familiar with the band the Scotch Bonnets, a reggae-rock band from Baltimore, before tonight, but the band’s singer-guitarist Lady Hatchet (not a Juggalo, as far as we can tell) was in town this week to play the Lager House. It’s a warm Thursday evening in Corktown, so the venue is hardly packed,...

Live Review: Melvin Davis w/Jeni Lee Richey & the Great Tribulation. Friday, May. 6 at PJ’s Lager House

Legendary soul man Melvin Davis touched down in Detroit at PJ’s Lager House last night. The 69-year-old veteran packed the club and, by the end of the night, had the entire place rocking like the soul clubs of yore.  Prepping for his 17-date tour of Europe starting next month, Detroit’s Soul Ambassador and his...

Live Review: All-Girls Boys Choir/the Banana Convention, Choking Susan and the Questions. Friday, Apr. 15 at PJ’s Lager House

For those who spurned the Detroit Music Awards last night (or those whose wallets couldn’t meet the price) the rest of the city offered, well, just what it offers every Friday night; rock n’ roll furor fermenting around every corner. At least, that’s how it was at PJ’s Lager House. Surprisingly packed considering the...

Live Review: Disappears w/Gardens and Dan Kroha and the Darleans. Thursday, Feb. 3 at PJ’s Lager House

It was a night of pure rock n’ roll and minimalistic Krautrock jams at PJ’s Lager House Thursday night. Chicago’s Disappears touched down in the city supported by Detroit’s own Gardens alongside Dan Kroha and the Darleans. Kicking off the night was Gardens. At face value, you might see them as just another Detroit...

After turning heads out in New York and Austin this past summer, local psych rockers Sisters of Your Sunshine Vapor prep themselves for their  first Detroit headlining show  in what’s seems like forever. The Doors-ian trio – consisting of vocalist/guitarist Sean Morrow, bassist Eric Oppitz and drummer Rick Sawoscinski –  are set to hit...

Live Review: Peelander-Z w/All-Girls Boys Choir and Birthday Suits. Friday, Oct. 15 at PJ’s Lager House

Yikes. Japan’s Peelander-Z touched down at the Corktown bar PJ’s Lager House last night. Opening for the New York-based but Japan-born quartet were the All-Girls Boys Choir. The LA duo features Alicia Warrington and Marlene Hammerle, both previously of Detroit’s Gore Gore Girls.  They jammed out a set of hefty blues rock, sweet croons...
