Winter’s such an apt time to be rockin’ a Thornbills jam. There’s is an enlivening chill… beautiful to behold, but biting in their icy evocations… I think of some subarctic cavern’s glistening bouquet of icicles, iridescent in the faint orange glow of a fogged sunrise… Something like that…via their own blend of autoharp-amped traditional folk, rustled with a tinge of rock and warmed, like sustaining steamy sips of hot cocoa from clutched cups, with their majestically well-matched harmonies, hazy lullabies and nimble, breathy pop ballads waltzing words under the crackle of an electric guitar or the snaky-sawed charm of a violin.

But levity and resolution often brighten the dark and thaw the cold. Drawn to the gorgeous yet fragile Americana anthems of Crosby, Stills and Nash, reverent for their families roots in traditional Ukranian folk and gypsy styles, but also informed with modern post-grunge trips and edged by, if not the structures or swagger, than, at least, least the attitude, of post-garage-rock Detroit music, Tamara Finlay and Jim Wiegand (with violin-whiz Daniel Winnick adding apt baroque accouterments), continue to  develop their folk tales, however frank, frosty or dark… Those precious harmonies win-out…

They debuted in 2011 on Third Man Records (single) and followed that up with an EP in June of last year, featuring:

After their performance at the Magic Stick tomorrow, keep your ears’ peeled for their follow-up EP, featuring this explosive track “Waking The Dead…” evoking a slumber with death and the homecoming of ghosts, thundered by marching drums and singing with a mean violin, eerie mandolins dancing with autoharps and then swooned by a throaty chorus given with more warmth and tingling gusto than they’ve ever yet conjured on their heretofore more whisking affairs…
