The Sights Tour Diary Entry No. 34: Crossing The Big Spit

The European tour began for me with a departure from Detroit to Heathrow Airport in London. For the others, it began earlier with them driving to New York City and then flying to Heathrow.

Picking a French Girl's Nose

A lot of thoughts were moving around my head — it’s been seven years since The Sights played over here and I was anxious to return. There were times I thought the band would never return and so to be back is a great feeling.

Paying to Pee

There I was, dumped out by Delta. I turn on my cell, thinking as long as I have wifi I’ll be able to use viber and therefore I can call our driver, Ben. It didn’t quite work out that way. Instead, I was running around Heathrow looking for Ben and the others and there was no one to be found. Well, there was a shitload of people, but none of them were my people.

After 45 minutes of running around I gave up and exchanged $10 for 4.55 Pounds (a crap rate). I left Ben a voicemail that probably sounded like a little girl who fell down the well (Baby Jessica-esque, for sure). As I hung the phone back up I saw Ben walking and ran toward him. It was great to see my old friend — he looks the exact same as he did the last time we worked together, nine years ago.

A free "pissoir!"

Ben and I waited for the others and they arrived, with Kyle slowly pushing a cart of our gear through the sea of people. It was great to know they made it safely. The Sights are here and ready to destroy.

On the Autobahn with Schantaman

I sat in the front of our Sprinter van, named Lester, and caught up with Ben as we war roomed our tour itinerary. With two days to get to Munich we began our march east and entered France through the Eurotunnel. We stayed the night in Baeron, Belgium with three men in each room.

Lester in Braeron, Belgium

Today was spent driving south through Germany. It’s fun to watch the others explore the different snacks and food in the motorway stops. In the afternoon, as I was catching  up on sleep, I woke to see a small car swerving into a semi. The car nicked the back of Lester as well. Ben wisely steered us out of that mess. That could be summed up as the highlight of my day.

Skippy the sausage king

As I write this we’re about 30 minutes from tonight’s destination, Munich. Tomorrow is Munich with Tenacious D, and I’m very excited to play a sold out show in Munich. I’d played here once before, when The Sights did a European tour with Guided by Voices. It’s good to be back.

All the best,
eddie
