Dally… Morning After
Things will inevitably get sloppy as the night goes on and the crowds grow (and imbibe)… and most of this will wind up not meaning as much to many as it did to some…But oh to be there, sounds swirling around these tubular alleys like a grimed up wind tunnel, song recitals echoing behind each other like ethereal sonic entities in a lapping race, four footpaths, four corners, four stages, four or five or eleven different kinds of genres and somewhere in the sea of bodies you drift past you shoulder-rub various delegates of myriad cliques or collectives or bands or gangs or troupes, united again, crossing paths and nodding or hand-shaking at load-ins/load-outs, united again, yes, this one more time out of, say, seven or eight, now, in our musical-calendar year, for another long listed festival format…
We were all just out and about together, weren’t we, for the Hamtramck Labor Day thing or was it just a few weeks back in Ferndale, now, for the Pig & Whiskey, and wait, remember that time back in Blowout? No…That already feels too long ago…My sights now are on the DIY Street Fair and how many bands will there be there?…60-some-odd…and if (or when, no, if) I recover from DIY’s whirl, it’ll the be onto Halloween and how many will dress up to be whoever and however will they pull off those ostentatious cover ballads and what am I gonna wear, what costume, to all tomorrow’s Detroit music festivals?
I used to get all worked up over this, trying to disseminate what it all meant or what it all could become, this swell of different energies, intertwined; man, it can be astounding when you’re ears are filled with it and your eyes see such rock-n-roll-valiant-type-clichés in real life, frozen in a moment or burned into your memory with those orange-glared stage-lights keeping these metro-area-music-heads, your neighbors, up in your brain in glorious guitar-slung, microphone raised friezes, …that one time at Dally when we played music really late outside… That perfect moment before people started puking on porches… When hip/hop swelled up against droney-glam-rock up against quavered-sultry psychedelic pop ballads up against trip-hop dashing techno-trance… And then the smell of burnt hot-dogs.
Where was I?
Yeah…I used to get worked-up about scenes…wondering what it all meant or at least what it was all gonna wind up meaning? What was it gonna mean in the end? Was there one, an end? Useless, man. If I want another Seattle, another Brooklyn, another Austin, if I want another Greenwich or Haight-Ashbury or whatever other mythologized mess of drummed-up culture-dynasties, then I’ll just stay home and read about ‘em.
If I try to analyze this thing, in the moment, I’d have to pin it down, poke it, keep it in a cage… Inevitably depriving it off its nutrients and causing it to become self-conscious of itself, its nuances, its “sound.” Define Detroit Music… If we’re all too aware of our feet and how they walk, we’ll be distracted and probably hit a wall. So I no longer want to figure out why there’s such a surplus of provocative, striking, varied sounds in this city …thus that we can allow so many different festivals…
Next on the Agenda –
Monday night (which is tomorrow or today, depending on when you read this), at the Lager House – Sinewy surf whips onto craggy psychedelic terrain and kicks up a cough-inducing feedback haze over hooky noise-pop – on display via Nashville based Turbo Fruits, headlining a night of progressive-neo-punk sounds surged at various tempos, whether cathartically rattled or charmingly shakeable…or, like this sample-able unmixed recording by Mexican Knives, hypno/tripped-out reverb/stomped sway.
And, then, if you’re not DIY-ing in Ferndalethis year (line up here), then maybe you’ll consider some of the 40-some-odd bands bolstering this year’s ScrummageFest (kicking off Friday, Sept 14,…also at PJ’s Lager House).
This free, freak-pop-inspiring/post-everything/shambolic-psychedelic-splatter-flared festival transitions to the Imagination Station for night # 2 (Saturday, 9/15 – the 1st annual Scrummage Launch Party). This festival will be a beast of a different nature, to be sure – and the line-up is quite expansive…
Going on at some point, late on Saturday night, will be vibrant/strange/zesty acts like Sheefy McFly & the Delorean, Isles of ESP, Pink Lightning
…and The Anonymous (streaming below…)
