WTF?: Planned Parenthood, protesters and the Pontiac show

July 12, 2011
By

There was no lack of laughs at the performance of The Daily Show co-founder Lizz Winstead’s performance at the Eagle Theater in Pontiac last Saturday night, but the benefit to raise money for Planned Parenthood also had some unexpected poignancy.

There was also some drama as scores of anti-abortion protesters staked out the sidewalk across the street from the theater, waving posters bearing bloody images of aborted fetuses and dancing as if in a state of rapture.

Supporters of Planned Parenthood staged a counter-demonstration, but didn’t look like they were having nearly as much fun as the fundamentalists.

Inside, once the show began, it was a different story. Winstead proved to be a real hoot, poking fun at the Tea Party, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder and Republican presidential hopefuls, who the comic described as “the cream of the crap” on a “tour de farce.”

The opening show in a six-city effort that’s being billed as the WTF (What’s the Fuss?) Tour, the fundraiser — which featured a few opening remarks from both Lori Lamerand, president of PP’s Mid and South Michigan Chapter, and Rep. Gary Peters, an Oakland County Democrat — was about raising awareness as well as money.

It is easy to forget, but earlier this year the U.S. government was facing another potential shutdown. At that time, some Republicans were threatening to scuttle a budget deal unless all federal funding for Planned Parenthood — about $363 million a year — was shut off.

The thing is that, by law, none of that federal money is allowed to pay for abortion at Planned Parenthood clinics. Those get funded through private donations. Democrats, fortunately, held fast, and the GOP pro-lifers backed down.

But the attacks on the nonprofit, which spends the great bulk of its resources on providing health care services such as pap smears and breast exams, continue.

And here’s the really crazy thing: One of PP’s primary missions is to provide services that prevent unwanted pregnancies. Take away the group and what it offers, and the inevitable result will be more women who don’t want to have children getting pregnant. Which means there will be more abortions, not fewer. Perhaps as many as a half-million more a year, according to PP’s estimates.

Which means that if those protesters outside the Eagle Theater and the right-wingers in Congress really wanted to reduce the number of bloody little unborns, they would be lobbying to help planned Parenthood get more money instead of trying to see it shut down.

But logic is lost on the radicals who want to dictate what women can do with their bodies.

What made the whole event unexpectedly heart touching was the way Winstead closed out the show. After spending most of the night riffing on material ripped, as the say, from the day’s headlines, she wrapped things up by sitting in a chair and reading an excerpt from an upcoming book.

With piercing candor, she recounted her own experience of getting pregnant at the age of 16. Not knowing where to turn, sitting on a bus, she saw an ad for a pregnancy counseling service. Instead of being Planned Parenthood, though, it turned out to be a church-backed agency that attempted to heap guilt on her for even contemplating having an abortion. An already arduous choice for a 16-year-old girl became all that much more difficult.

No one was laughing when Winstead turned the last page of her story. But more than a few were shedding tears.

It was a remarkably courageous performance.

Too bad those rapturous teens singing and dancing across the street couldn’t experience it.

No fundamentalist here. I was one of the many pro-life people who protested Planned Parenthood (PP). PP is a racist organization, founded by Margaret Sanger (“black people are weeds”) and whose clinics are mostly in minority neighborhoods (hmmmm.) PP does not do mammograms! Two woman I know who attended the show said it was chock-full of “fuck this” or “fuck that.” Her parents and society failed Lizz when she got pregnant as a kid. That should not justify abortion now.  Lizz ended the show by saying “See you in Hell.” Sadly I think she is suffering her own Hell now.

Homosexuality, Abortion, and Martin Luther King By Rev. Dr. Clenard H. Childress, Jr. Nationwide (June 13, 2011) — One of the more fascinating exchanges in Scripture which depicts the contemporary decorum of debate in our present-day culture is clearly seen when Jesus confronted and debated the pharisaical religious order of His day. John the 8th Chapter illuminates the problem when there is debate with those who are in denial of their condition. The religious elite had no intention of trying to find the truth. These bigots often masqueraded in deception and majored in misinformation deceiving the uninitiated. Jesus began a discussion about being enslaved to sin and it caused the depth of the problem to surface. Their reply to our Lord’s lesson is recorded in John 8:33 when they said, “We have never been in bondage to any man!” Yes, they had become so consumed in their own maliciousness and chicanery, they lost sight of reality, and were living in denial believing their own press releases. The Roman Empire had been occupying and subjugating Israel for multiple years along with the religious elite. They were enslaved to man outwardly and sin inwardly and blind to both. Certainly at that point, Jesus saw the futility of trying to reach that audience with truth, yet out of compassion he persisted. The elites were determined to twist and malign the facts to accommodate their lifestyle, though in error. They lived in a vacuum of denial refusing to see the obvious. When truth is ignored, or denied, the course often taken by those in denial is to first obfuscate, then defame, diminish, and finally denounce the messenger. This crowd resorted to using the “N-word” of that day: “Samaritan”, and even went so far as declaring that Jesus was the devil. Sound familiar? It is similar today, for instead of examining the data, this generation’s elites combat truth with ideology, character assassination, deception, and of course, denial. The two defining issues of the day which will determine the course of our culture, and the destiny of our nation, are abortion and homosexuality… Pro-choice, and homosexual and lesbian activists, all claim their cause is a Civil Rights issue. Yet the “Civil Rights” of the unborn children are being denied, and it is intellectually dishonest to claim a “right” for yourself, and by so doing, deny the rights of someone else, especially when that someone is an unborn infant. These individuals are completely wrong because you do not give Civil Rights to sexual orientation because your sexual orientation could be flawed. “Civil Rights” are based on “Birth Rights,” and according to the APA, homosexuality and lesbianism is an acquired behavior, not something like the color of your skin – something you’re born with. You were not born homosexual, so sexual preference is not a Civil Right – it’s a preference. What probably grieves me the most is that they both claim Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King as an icon for their cause, when essentially nothing could be further from the truth. Dr. King was a chief facilitator of the Civil Rights Movement, and by his death at the hand of an assassin, paid the ultimate price for his cause. Freeing African-Americans from centuries of slavery, bigotry and racism, does not equate with sexual preference, and so in some ways, Dr. King’s writings are more relevant, imperative, and apropos today than when he first penned them decades ago. Like any true Prophet of God, he is and was before his time, yet his words – transcending time – speak loudly and clearly to us today. The pimping of Dr. King by the racist abortion industry and by homosexual and lesbian activists, needs to cease. But since you admire him so much, and like to invoke his name so often, perhaps you might also adhere to his counsel. Below are some excerpts from Dr. King’s 1957-1958 monthly advice columns for “Ebony Magazine” on the two defining issues of this present day: Abortion and Homosexuality. I know there will be those – like the pharisaical religious elite of Jesus’ day – who will continue in their state of denial, rejecting the obvious, but for those of you who objectively look at this interview, perhaps it will subjectively help you decide what is right and what is wrong. Dr. Martin Luther King On Parenting QUESTION: I was in a home the other day where a three (3) year old child read the riot act to his mother. The mother took it with a sheepish smile. This, I am told, is permissiveness. It seems to me that what modern children need is a large dose of parental permissiveness applied to their backsides. Do you agree? MLK: It is quite true that many modern parents go too far in allowing their children to express themselves with hardly a modicum of discipline… This almost “lunatic fringe” of modern child care has been responsible for most strange and fantastic methods of child rearing in many American homes… The child must realize that there are rules of the game which he did not make and that he cannot break with impunity. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. On Premarital Sex QUESTION: I was raised in a Christian environment. My father placed great stress on premarital virginity. I am 29. Of late, I have begun to doubt the validity of his teaching. Is he right? MLK: I think you should hold firm to the principle of premarital virginity. The problems created by premarital sex relationships are far greater than the problems created by premarital virginity. The suspicion, fears, and guilt feelings generated by premarital sex relations are contributing factors to the present breakdown of the family. Real men still respect purity and virginity within women. If a man breaks a relationship with you because you would not allow him to participate in the sexual act, you can be assured that he did not love you from the beginning. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. On Homosexuality QUESTION: My problem is different from the ones most people have. I am a boy, but I feel about boys the way I ought to feel about girls. I don’t want my parents to know about me. What can I do? MLK: Your problem is not at all an uncommon one. However, it does require careful attention. The type of feeling that you have toward boys is probably not an innate tendency, but something that has been culturally acquired… You are already on the right road toward a solution, since you honestly recognize the problem and have a desire to solve it. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. On Abortion QUESTION: About two years ago, I was going with a young lady who became pregnant. I refused to marry her. As a result, I was directly responsible for a crime. It was not until a month later that I realized the awful thing I had done. I begged her to forgive me, to come back, but she has not answered my letters. The thing stays on my mind. What can I do? I have prayed for forgiveness. MLK: You have made a mistake… One can never rectify a mistake until he admits that a mistake has been made. Now that you have prayed for forgiveness and acknowledged your mistake, you must turn your vision to the future… Now that you have repented, don’t concentrate on what you failed to do in the past, but what you are determined to do in the future.” To the seekers of truth in this ongoing debate, I pray you can perceive through his words and feel the spirit of Dr. King and know how he stood on these present-day issues. The iconic use of Dr. King as an advocate for true social justice is as appropriate as the Son speaking on the behalf of his Father. But to attempt to do the same for abortion and homosexual rights, is as using Mahalia Jackson as the voice of hip hop; the fire-breathing Abolitionist, John Brown, as the face of the pacifist anti-war movement; proclaiming Marion Anderson mentored Snooki; or portraying Barack Obama, as a Constitutional Conservative. It’s pure deception! Rev. Clenard H. Childress Jr is the senior pastor of the New Calvary Baptist Church.PRESS CONTACT:Cleanard Childress Jr.revchildressjr@aol.com973-783-7150

So, you have a whole grab-bag of objections – Swear words, some half-baked, spurious references to supposed racism, and just a general “I don’t like her” attitude.  You forgot to mention that you really objected to her choice of shoes.

    Yeah, you’re a fundamentalist.

  • Nicholasdec6

I am Catholic! If you think that is fundamentalist, fine!
What I object to is the killing of innocent human lives in the womb!

I believe we can do better for women that chemicals ingested for birth control, and aborting their babies when they have a pregnancy they did not plan on.Â
women should not have to pollute their bodies with artificial conconcoction or court a miniture version of the Goodyear Blimp.  Natural Family Planning is not”Vatican Roulette”.  Mother Teresa’a  nuns taught it to illiterate women in Calcutta with a 99% or better rate of success.  Birth control pills do not make women  powerful, it makes them pitiful.  Make the man submit to your cycle!
There are real heroes every day at pregnancy counseling centers helping women to make positive life affirming choices for their preborn babies.  Many good folks also give of their time, money and goods to help.  Planned Parenthood gets Title X Government funds for the “education” of women on how to obtain an abortion or get a judicial bypass to get one behind their parent’s backs.  The life affirming folks give out of the good of their hearts, with love of both mother and baby.  Thee only thing Planned Parenthood changes is that  she is till and always wil have been a mother, but now she is a mother of a dead child.  Also PP does NOT do mammograms, and never have there are many other places that do not give abortions but give PAP smears and mammograms.  A”breast exam” is NOT a mammogram!
I was one of the women who shoed the reality to the theater goers that evening.  The reality is their money is not going for “Women”s Health” or “empowerment”.
It is going to kill and mutilate precious little people made in God’s Image and Likeness

    SOME HOOT!

RE:  Lizz Winstead’s Benefit for PP of MI

Only someone with a warped sense of humor and one-sided reporting who thinks dropping “f-word bombs” on Republican presidential hopefuls, the Tea Party, traditional marriage, chastity, Catholics, a pre-born baby, and even God, could report that Lizz Winstead was just “poking fun” at them.  I was present at this so-called comedy routine and heard it all myself!  The profane comedian told her sad story of having an abortion at age 16 in order to remain “popular” in school  and left the impression that abortion enabled her to become the “success” she is today.  She came across as a  wounded, broken woman still trying to recover from the abortion.  Planned Parenthood provided colorful condoms for the audience to take home and the small audience (175) left somber–probably not knowing why.
Meanwhile, a large youth group outside the theater celebrated “the gift of Life” with streams of yellow balloons, singing, dancing, and prayer.  Other protesters showed the humanity of pre-born babies and how abortion is a viiolent act.  But it seems “logic is lost” on those who believe that an unborn child can be killed and treated like trash.
The bulk of Planned Parenthood’s profit comes from abortions (325,000 last year alone).  PP targets and exploits young people (under age 25), promotes any and all sex acts with any partner (or partners) regardless of age or gender as normal, insinuates “birth control always protects you” and that abortion is safe and easy.
The reporter failed to mention that other federally funded health clinics for low income individuals are located in MI that provide more services (including Mammograms) than PP.  While PP is prohibited from using tax-payer money to facilitate abortion, our money pays for PP’s staff, facilities, and equipment – just not the actual abortion procedures.  Abortion kills a human being.  What a hoot!

I was expecting a educated reply. People resort to potty language when they can’t say anything intelligent.
