Going for the Golds: Detroit’s ‘Hardcore Pawn’ Returns Aug. 16

TruTV execs appear to think they’ve struck gold – as in Les and Seth Gold, the father-son team who, with their daughter-sister Ashley Broad (Gold), are proprietors of Detroit’s legendary American Jewelry and Loan on 8 Mile and the cable channel’s latest reality-show stars.

After a one-hour, two-episode tryout last December, the family pawnbrokers debut at 10 p.m. Monday in their own regular series, Hardcore Pawn, and truTV is promoting the bejeezus out of it. On-screen reminders of the show’s premiere have aired during virtually every program on the station’s schedule.

And with good reason, since it’s hard to imagine how the Golds possibly can top Monday’s return with any successive episodes. It’s almost a certainty that TV has never witnessed a horse performing on a stripper pole, even on America’s Got Talent. If that’s not enough, Les gets a little ass during the show – in the form of a tiny donkey who follows the horse inside the pawn shop. You read that right: inside the building.

Shot on location inside the 50,000 square-foot Detroit emporium and produced by Richard Dominick, the man who gave the world The Jerry Springer Show, Hardcore Pawn has enacted some subtle changes since its December test run. The most noticeable difference is that, following the style of other truTV reality series, Les, Seth and Ashley are intercut throughout the show in individual shots, commenting on the in-store action and philosophizing about the highs and lows of pawnbrokery. Ashley, for her part, tries a bit too hard to position herself as the contrarian bitch of the store as general manager; a key will be whether viewers are attracted by her chutzpah or repelled by her attitude.

In the main storyline, a woman who claims American Jewelry and Loan lost the diamonds out of her earrings goes on a mini-rampage, calling Les everything but a respectable merchant and eventually threatening his safety, which in turn causes Les to go off on the store’s security crew.

Hardcore Pawn is not a show for the meek of ear: edited f-bombs fly around the store faster than pawn tickets. But like Les likes to say, it’s a crazy business.

Back-to-back episodes repeat at 2 a.m. Tuesday.

    Ashley is horrible. The show would be a lot better without her. She doesn’t add anything and the way she undermines people and lowballs them is like the sadistic bitch gets some thrill out of making money on people’s misery. She’s awful to look at too with that skanky stringy hair and her ugly pinched up mouth and that sharp big beak of a nose. Even if she’s just putting the BITCH act on for TV she’s still a little troll, you can tell. She adds NOTHING to the show at all, she’s not even eye candy with her ugly face. Kind of like a Poison Dwarf! I’d like to see that fat black woman who was so mad at Les, come back and hang a GOOD OLD FASHIONED NIGGAR WHIPPING on sweet little diva ASHLEY….ending with the mammy pulling down her pants and making ASSSS-LEY lick some good old black funk hole. THAT would be good tv. I can’t wait to hear that some customer that has been offended catches Ashley the MOUTH alone and teaches that wicked slut some manners….Detroit Style—thump her, beat her and horse whip her.

    Yeah I’m watching the show for the first (and probably last) time. Horrible show and this Les guy (self proclaimed pawn king!!) can suck on Rick Harrison’s weener all day long.
    Rick is a gentleman, and Les is a slumlord and you can clearly see that the customers can tell as well just by the way they react to them. Not ONE customer likes the way they’re treated.
    The daughter is the most annoying ugly little bitch to ever make it on TV. She has 2 kids. They must be twins, cause i doubt she found a man that banged her twice!

    Yep this les guy is a horrible business man. Rick from vegas show is atleast honest and like return clients. This les guy is gunning for a one time deal everytime and burns every bridge with every person that steps foot in that place everytime. He totally disrepects everyone if something is worth 500 bucks this guy is so greedy he’ll offer 50 bucks and when they say no he says not interested. the way most pawn shops work is i think they try to offer 30-50% of the value atleast. this greedy f**k will try and burn you everytime. Im surprised someone hasn’t shot this wiezel of a man. Look at the guy in this case you can judge a book by its cover. See his wife? i wonder how much he has to pay her to stay with him. Yeah its fun to watch but kinda getting sick of this scumbag les rip evryone off. When he dies hopefully soon you can tell his son is atleast honest has morals and values he will take over and i bet the biz thrives much more without scumbag dad around. Oh the daughter she need a script of valum and she should be ok.

    Hi; I’ve been in many pawnshops over the years in several West Coast cities. Unfortunately the way Les is acting is far more typical than you would like to think. Generally they’ll offer a person roughly ten percent of the resale value of an item for loan, maybe fifteen to twenty for a sale depending on how quickly they can manage to turn something around. I watched a guy sell a Snap On 1/4 ratchet set to a shop recently (within the past two weeks) for fifty bucks and he had to fight to get that much. I went back three days later and they have it for sale for three hundred seventy dollars.

    I enjoy the shows drama. I also work in a hostile environment where 99% of customers are obnoxious ignorant niggers. I would love to see how tough the goods are without their security. I respect les for his entrepreneurial aspirations and building a solid business. I can’t stand his kids fight over money and act like they’re the ones who put their blood sweat and tears in the business. Seth is a chump who acts like he’s the brains of the whole operation. He honestly believes he has everything to do with the success of american jewelry. He’s a prick who undermines his father, the man who built it from the ground up without him, and credits only himself. Ashley is a major fat jew. Her beady eyes sends shivers down my spine. All she does is talks about herself and her knowledge in “geological” stones. These kids were born into an already multimillion dollar business. If they were to start with nothing, like most self made millionaires, they would have nothing. I have never seen anyone more full of themselves. Pawn stars is the same with Rick’s son, Corey “fat fuck” Harrison. Seth and Ashley need to stop acting like they run shit and eat a piece of humble pie and realize how worthless they are and always know that business will do fine (even better) without them.
