Wish you had an excuse to play hooky and day drink? Thanks to Cinco de Mayo you do. Based on our Best of Detroit survey results, we’ve rounded up some of the best places to celebrate Cinco in metro Detroit. Ole!

Xochimilco – Voted Best Mexican Cuisine in Wayne County

On a normal evening, this popular Mexicantown eatery often has a dining crowd filling its three rooms downstairs, spilling over onto the second floor, drawn by its large portions and inexpensive menu. (On Cinco de Mayo, expect ever bigger crowds.) Thanks to Xochi’s liquor license, your friends can keep on tippling while you enjoy a restorative burrito, enchilada or the “super nachos” with ground beef and diced veggies smothered in melted cheese and jalapeños.

Sabor Latino – Best Mexican Cuisine in Washtenaw County
(211 N. Main St., Ann Arbor; 734-214-7775)

It would be more appropriate to call Sabor Latino a Latin American restaurant, but they do serve Mexican cuisine, among that of many other Central and South American nations, including such dishes as huevos rancheros, chilaquiles and more. Celebrate Cinco de Mayo with them tonight and get a free Cinco t-shirt with the purchase of any entree. Plus look for specials on margaritas and brews.

El Charro’s – Best Mexican Cuisine in Macomb County
(21519 21 Mile Rd., Macomb Twp, 586-598-7556)

Sure, El Charro offers Mexican classics, but the spot is also popular for its puffy soft-shelled tacos. For dessert, order the fried ice cream or the sopariaz, a fried tortilla with honey and cinnamon. Celebrate Cinco all day with live musical performances and an El Jimador margarita (or two, or three).

Imperial Taco Bar – Best Restaurant to Spend Less Than $15 in Oakland County; Best Mexican Cuisine in Oakland County; Best Tacos in the Suburbs
(22828 Woodward Ave.; 248-850-8060)

Imperial’s upbeat atmosphere, playful dishes and attractive prices are all combined in a space that, in good weather, throws open its doors to create a sun-splashed dining area with a hint of Baja breeze. It’s arguably the hippest spot in a dining scene that has become one of the best in the metroplex in just the last few years.
