Barrow made the allegation in a complaint filed with Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey on May 20. Attorney Melvin “Butch” Hollowell, an election-law expert advising the Duggan campaign, said this is part of a series of challenges by Barrow that “lack merit.”

Resolution of the dispute could boil down to a matter of interpretation. As Barrow points out in his complaint, the charter states:

“A person seeking elective office must be a citizen of the United States, a resident and a qualified and registered voter of the City of Detroit for one (1) year at the time of filing for office and retain that status throughout their tenure in any such elective office.”

A Metro Times review of public records confirmed Barrow’s claim that Duggan, who had lived in Livonia until last year, registered to vote in Detroit on April 16, 2012. However, he filed to run for mayor on April 2, 2013 — clearly less than one year.

But, as Hollowell noted, the actual filing deadline wasn’t until May 14. If the filing deadline, rather than the filing date, is used as the demarcation point, then Duggan meets the requirement.

Barrow contends that the language in the charter is clear, and that it should be strictly adhered to. If that’s the case, then it could well be as Barrow said: “Duggan is as good as toast. He won’t be on the ballot.”

Hollowell, on the other hand, contends that the courts tend to take a broad view when it comes to election law. The thinking is that it’s better to let voters, rather than judges, play the key role in deciding who participates in elections.

Jocelyn Benson, dean of the Wayne State University Law School, told us that Barrow doesn’t appear to have much of a case.

“It’s nonsensical to interpret the provision as strictly as the Barrow campaign is suggesting,” said Benson, a member of the Detroit Board of Ethics. “In my view, as long as the candidate is a resident of the city of Detroit for a year prior to the filing deadline, that should be sufficient to comply with the law.”

According to a press release, “The event is a kick-off fundraiser for the recording and release of her sixth studio album, due out this Fall. She will be showcasing new songs from her forthcoming record, along with highlights from her entire catalog. Joining her onstage are musicians Alison Lewis, Billy Brandt, Danny Kroha, Don “Doop” Duprie, Eddie Baranek, Julia Stephenson, Leah Elizabeth Dunston, Loretta Lucas, Pete Ballard, Robert Meltzer, Scottie Stone and Tino Gross. The show will open with solo sets by Detroit Music Award winner Emily Rose at 9pm followed by Inside Outlaw, Matt Dmits at 9:30pm.

Audra’s upcoming Indiegogo campaign officially begins June 18 on the crowd-funding website Indiegogo.com. Reward items for the campaign will be available at this show, including handcrafted box sets of her complete recordings and a selection of Kubat’s paintings for sale in The Tangent Gallery. An afterglow will follow the performance.

The Rogue Satellites has a new album, Other Angels, a record which perfectly showcases the band’s evolution from electronica-tinged pop rock, Pixies-esque love monkeys to challenging, experimental, impossible to pin down, awkward apes. Make no mistake, the hooks are still there on a song like opener “Party Angels,” which recalls the Smashing Pumpkins at their most stunningly difficult, or the sexual tension that raged in the background when Sonic Youth were playing. The twin vocals of Jaye Thomas and Lisa Poszywak (real life beaus and it shows) are both sweet and sinister, kinda like those little girls in the Shining with without the hotel and Jack Nick. Put simply, this is a band which refuses to sit still, and thank God for that.

It’s either whatever’s newest or its some junkfood-ish afternoon snack of some old favorite from five or ten years ago, albums as old shirts I’d thought I’d worn out but re-freshen with some frebreeze. Returning to old jams or shuffling through whatever’s under the buzzlight today or tomorrow means that whatever was bumping yesterday is just an echo.

I had an epiphany and it wasn’t entirely Daft Punk’s fault. It was just the timing of Random Access Memories – fatefully scorching its way into our physical/temporal sphere like a neon-flame-wreathed ion-propulsion Delorean -at this moment, just about the halfway point of the year. Some have said: meh. Others have said: holy fucking shitballs! Suffice it to say, it is their most epic production to date since the Parisian duo started re-imagining modern raves and bringing nuanced artistry back to the domain of disco…

But, if you think about it, we’ve heard this before. When I actually took a minute and stopped aural injections of the brand new or the old cozy‘s, I realized that these last few months have brought a considerable cache of “epic productions,” or at least album’s with thick back-stories, their releases drummed up into events -if merely because they are embossed as next or new chapters, continuing music sagas (starring certain iconic bands) that we’ve grown familiar with, enchanted-by, or completely intoxicated with their mix of kool-aid.

David Bowie came back to life. My Bloody Valentine finally let their shoegaze cat out of the bag. Black Flag (or, at least some of the old crew + Greg Ginn) are getting back into the van, with a new album. Even locals like Saturday Looks Good To Me got back into the groove with their first album in six years: One Kiss Ends It All.  Oh, and I almost forgot: ADULT. is back, also, with The Way Things Fall…

Saturday Looks Good To Me plays a release-show party at the Loving Touch (Ferndale) on Friday – with Secret Twins and El Dee

This duo pull off sarcastic satires of hipsterdom with such panache, they drop f*bombs as though they were singing lullabies and rankle up the synth-pop craze with delicate slices of dissonant tones and refreshing dabs of noisy yanks on guitars gear shift. But the Rogue Satellites, with their sequenced beats and measured amount of samples under live guitars, cooling keyboards and sun-glittered chimes.

They might be the F*ckAll punks with shredded denim in the back of your classroom or the gothy kids glowering from the shaded patch of the jungle gym judging all the other conformists playing about with traditional ideas of indie-pop, but then you get close enough to see this affable, humble smile in their sound, a warm inviting charm that wears poetic vitriol and existential edginess so effortlessly.

Those rough skater ballad harking guitars and nasal boy vocals might invite seminal indie-flavors from maybe a Superchunk or an Archers of Loaf, but the keyboards and harmonies could easily jettison this thing into space-rock’s airspace, if not for the softening chamber-pop crackle easing in with those tender, wispy girl vocals taking the lead along with the giddier peal of those xylophones.

You’ll experience that blend of genres and playfully gnawing vocals on the single below, only to be shifted suddenly towards the end, for a minute-long outtro taking on a spooky, psychedelic folk waltz off and up towards the snarky celestial hang-out of these Other Angels.

The song is an ode to Evil Dead, of which BDM’s Trevor Strnad said, “I remember the first time I saw Evil Dead… it was at my friend’s birthday party in 7th grade. It was recommended by the same older sister that had gotten us all into punk and heavy metal music… so we knew we were in for the real deal. The movie scared the unholy 13 year old shit out of us… we were terrified. I remember the possessions really affecting me… the way the people would contort and writhe was disturbing. The possessed had that awful way that they sounded when they spoke and howled… pretty insane as well. The vine rape scene was intense… I love the idea of the forest coming alive… so much so that I wrote a song about it many years later.”

It was a bit of a “world’s collide” event too – with CEOs rubbing shoulders with rockers, high-ranking execs with DJs and all manner of reprobates.

Thanks to the open bar and awesome free food, everyone seemed to be having a great time. Musicians seen networking and chowing down included the members of White Shag, Amy Gore & Her Valentines, Kaleido, Dead in 5, Jennifer Westwood & Dylan Dunbar, Frank Woodman, the Bobby Electric, the Hounds Below, and award-winning comedian Jimmy Doom.

Much fun was had by all.
